Keeping Company With Those Who Wait

Hello there,
Come sit with me a moment.
Not too long mind you,
He is coming.
Don’t look at me that way.
I know he is coming.

When he comes,
We will eat ice cream, caramel for two.
And while we lick up melting paradise,
We will chat about nothing in particular,
Wasting away the day in pure bliss.
I know because he told me so.

When he comes,
We will talk long into the night.
Relishing each other’s closeness,
For us, time ceases to exist.
In this way, we live infinitely.
I know because you told me so.

But until then, I think I will rest,
Just for a little while.
For in the failing light he walks,
Down the street and past the ice cream shop,
Towards me, long talks and paradise.
I know because he promised.

But maybe . . . probably . . .
I know because I’m not looking . . .
